Waldrich (Waldish: ᚡᛆᛚᛚᛂᚱᛁᚴᛂ, Vallerike), officially the Waldish Confederation (Waldish: ᚡᛆᛚᛚᛋᚴ᛬ᚠᚮᚱᛒᚢᚿᛑ, Vallsk Forbund), is an island sovereign state in the Svallandic archipelago of northern Calesia. It lies between the X Ocean to the north, the X Ocean to the east, and the X Sea to the southwest. The nation shares a land border with Valmut to the southeast, and maritime borders with X to the west and Falland to the south. Alsvik is Waldrich's capital and largest city, with other major cities including Hellnafjord, Strandhavn, Kongsheim, and Hovberg. With a population of approximately 63 million and a total area of 648,557 square kilometers, Waldrich is the Xth most populous and Xth largest nation in Teleon.
Humans first settled Waldrich between the 10th and 11th millennia BC, at the end of the last ice age. During late antiquity, the Waldic tribes inhabiting the Waldrich and the rest of Svalland began to migrate south into mainland Calesia, invading and ultimately occupying the Cambran Empire. These tribes organized into petty kingdoms during the early middle ages, unifiying to form the Waldian Empire in 759. At its height in the 9th century, the Waldian Empire controlled all of Svalland and much of continental northern Calesia from its capital in modern-day Falland. During the late 10th and early 11th centuries, Waldian imperial rule began to weaken as a result of overextension, administrative mismanagement, and external pressures resulting from !Slavic and !French invasions of its continental territories. The empire ultimately collapsed in 1031 after the !French capture of !GermanicRome, forcing the imperial government to relocate to Alsvik. The Waldians continued to rule from Alsvik as a rump state known as the Svallandic Empire, which maintained control over Waldia's insular possessions in Svalland. Svalland's political situation stabilized during the Template:High Middle Ages, undergoing a golden age in which Alsvik emerged as a significant cultural and economic hub in northern Calesia. However, Svalland was decimated as a result of the Great Impact of 1348, causing significant societal upheaval and killing nearly half of Svalland's pre-impact population in the subsequent global famine. The !Reformation of the 16th century further divided the realm along religious lines, with !Protestantism taking hold in the southern kingdoms in defiance of the Northern Apostolic Church. Increasing repression from Alsvik prompted the southern kingdoms to revolt against imperial rule, causing the empire to collapse and fragment in 1587.
The Apostolic kingdoms of Waldrich subsequently established the Old Waldish Confederacy to fill the power vaccuum left by the collapse of Svalland. Nominally a defensive alliance between independent and co-equal kingdoms, the Kingdom of Jarnland established de facto hegemony over the Confederacy as its largest and most powerful constituent state. Jarnland also emerged as a major colonial power beginning in the 17th century, ruling over much of Razan and northern Elia Boreal at its height in the late 18th century. Jarnland lost most of its colonies as a consequence of the X War of the early 19th century, which caused significant destruction throughout the Confederacy and prompted its centralization into a federal state. After a brief period of stability during the mid-19th century, Waldrich was defeated by Falland in the First Cuthish War of 1866. The defeat sent the nation into turmoil, culminating in the Waldish Revolution. Foresitter Karl II instituted liberalizing reforms in response, resulting in the end of absolutism and the ratification of a democratic constitution. After a half-century long arms race with Falland, war again broke out betweent the two powers in 1919. Waldrich's victory in 1921 caused support for nationalist and revanchist political elements to rise in Falland, allowing national syndicalists to take power in the 1925 elections. The continued spread of national syndicalism worldwide throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s set the stage for the outbreak of the Great War in 1934, which pitted Waldrich and the X Powers against Falland and the Y Powers. The Y Powers surrendered unconditionally in 1940, with Waldrich and its allies occupying Falland.
Contemporary Waldrich is a great power, wielding significant regional and global influence in economic, cultural, diplomatic, and military affairs. It is a founding member of the Nordbund and X Economic Partnership, and holds a permanent seat on the X Security Council. Waldrich is a developed country, with a high income economy that ranks as the Xth largest in the world. Its economic system, known internationally as the Waldish model, combines high economic freedom with a strong social safety net centered around a universal basic income. Waldrich is a recognized nuclear weapons state under the Treaty of Hellnafjord and possesses the Xth largest military in the world, with a blue-water navy that allows it to project power globally.
