From Middle Menapian od, or, from Old Menapian awr, from Primitive Menapian aβer, awer ("confluence"), from Proto-Bythonic aber ("confluence"), from Proto-Celtic *adberos. Cognate with Welsh aber ("confluence"), Breton aber ("confluence"), Cornish aber ("confluence"). Borrowed by French as od ("ria").
