Classification
Jet Fighter Aircraft, also known as Fighters, are military aircraft designed primarily for the purposes of air-to-air combat. These planes are grouped into generations of crafts, which share design traits and key philosophies based around the technological developments occurring in the area within which they were developed. Five generations are currently widely recognized, with a sixth in limited recognition.
- First Generation: - High Subsonic, limited utilization of rockets with a primary cannon armament
- Second Generation: - Air-to-Air missiles, radar
- Second and One-Half Generation: - Transonic Air-to-Air Missiles, Supersonic Radar
- Third Generation: - Limited Purpose Supersonic, Mach Two Air-to-Air Missiles, Multi-Purpose Designs
- Fourth Generation: - Supersonic (multirole), High Efficiency, High Maneuverability (4)
- Fourth and One-Half Generation: - Modern Avionics, including AESA Radars. Limited Stealth Capabilities.
- Fifth Generation: - Advance in integrated avionics, low observable stealth
- Fifth and One-Half Generation - All aspect stealth, integration of directed energy weapons for both defense against drones and active assault.
- Sixth Generation: - Category in debate, generally argued to include integration with Artificial Intelligence and the capability to autonomously manage drones.
