Hovsborg is the capital of Vermrike. It is the largest city on the Vermrish peninsula. It is situated along the Silver River's estuary into the ocean on the east coast of Vermrike, with a population of approximately 900,000 in the city proper and about 2 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area.

History

Etymology

According to the Vermrish written records, Hovsborg was founded around 1050 by King Sten Örnöga. Recent archaeological research, however, uncovered burials which could be dated to prior to AD 1000, evidence of a preceding urban settlement. There are evidence of people living in the area around the Silver River strait. The city's name was first recorded in writing in 1051 as Hófsbaurka (The Court's Fort).

The city's coat of arms depicts Sten Örnöga and was adopted in the late 12th century.

Other names

Hovsborg has various nicknames and names in other languages. The city is sometimes known as "The Head Court" (Vermrish: Hodehovet), probably due to the similarity between the words court and head. It is sometimes used as a deragatory term to suggest that the people in power need to have their heads checked. The nickname is mostly used by people from out of town, and rarely by people from the Hovsborg region.

Map of the Capital District Metro

The Hovsborg Metro (Vermrish: Hovsborgs U-bana) is the city's main rapid transit system. The first line opened in 1928, and today the system has 140 stations in use,[1] of which 68 are underground and 72 above ground. There are four coloured lines, as shown on the tube maps, which form eight numbered routes with different termini. Routes numbered 17, 18 and 19 (green line), 13 and 14 (red line) and 10 and 11 (blue line) all go through the centre of the city, resulting in a very centralized system. All four lines interchange at The Hovsborg Central Station. Apart from this, there are three other interchange between lines, at Radioplan, Vindögeplatsen and Gunneby stations.

Ferries

Silverlinjen (The Silver Line) is a ferry line trafficking the Silver River since the 1980s. It connects both sides of the river on a zig-zag pattern[3] between the mainland and Bonnaholmen on the part between the Kungsbron and Jálesbergsbron bridges. The ferry is free of charge and carries mainly tourists who want to see the city from the river.

Culture

Sports

As in all of Vermrike, a variety of sports are followed, including football, ice hockey, basketball, handball, floorball, baseball, and figure skating. A varied amateur and professional sports clubs scene exists.

Hovsborg is the birthplace of football in Vermike as the country's first football match was played there in 1891. The city's three major sports clubs, Gunneby IK, Västerängane IF, and HK66 all have extensive histories in both football and ice hockey and have historically had teams in both sport's top divisions.

The city's most notable sports venues are Hammarvalla (football), Stordömstadion (football) and Vermium (multisport).
