The United Republics of Hesperria, Montfiore, and Nugorria[a], commonly referred to as the United Republics (UR) or Hesperia [b], is a sovereign state located in northwestern Adema. Situated on the Alfican Peninsula, it is bounded by Ocassia to its west, ?? to its south, the Mesochersean Sea and Costa Luna to its east, and shares maritime borders with Ausonia via the Straits of Odyssea and Bay of Cornouaille to the north. It is the largest country in the Alfican Peninsula and of Northwestern Adema as a whole, both in terms of land area and population, with a population of around 89 million, mainly concentrated in the west — where its capital and largest city of Christiana de Campostella — and northeastern coast.
Early human habitation is largely present in the area from around 35,000 years ago, with the peninsula being home to a panoply of various people groups, including the Celts, Alficans, and Berbers. The Odysseans and Ademans would later establish colonies throughout the northeastern coast, with the most successful being the city of Carthage, which would grow into a prosperous thalassocratic state. The Remians would later conquer the peninsula and establish the province of Alfica, facilitating the Remization and later Christianization of the peninsula. The subsequent collapse of the empire and the subsequent inward migration of tribes and peoples from central Adria and further south from Adema would exert societal pressures that would lead both to the establishment of the Exarchate of Christiana in 410 — traditionally regarded as the first Hesperian state — and its later fracturing into several petty kingdoms and principalities by the 8th century AD. The Hesperian heartland would endure this period of general instability until the process of unification was completed by the 14th century AD, with the unification of the duchies of Christiana, Carthage, and ??.
It would also be around this time that the democratic institutions of the Hesperian state would be established — centered around the Captain-Regent and the old Senate, as well as an assembly of notables — which would be formalized by the 1600s, by which time had evolved into a de facto crowned republic. These state structures would endure throughout the centuries — even after the establishment of the personal union with neighboring Ocassia, the consolidation of its control over Montfiore and Nugorria, and the establishment of its small colonial holdings in Eurythia — until the Night of Sorrows in 1865, when the absolutist Alexander IV and I instigated a violent coup against the Senate, and establishing the United Kingdom of Alfica in its place. This triggered a 40-year long protracted civil conflict between royalist forces and rebels loyal to the rump Senate and its provisional government, which would end with the Glorious Revolution of 1905 which republican forces would — with their Ausonian allies — oust Ocassian and Revellan troops and reestablish the Republic.
