Dr. Ngư Long Bằng (18 June 1965) is a former businessman who was the founder of two companies, namely Eupraxia Networks and Cryptopylos Security, and was its chief technology officer (CTO) since 1997 and chief executive officer (CEO) from 2004 to 2008, respectively. After retiring from business, he is made a professor of computer science and computer engineering at Minh Vuong University.
Early Life
Bằng was born in Kontin on 18 June 1955 to a father who was a high school teacher and a mother a marine biologist. At a young age, he became interested in electronics and strove to pursue his dream of being an electronic engineer.
He attended the prestigious Nguyễn Gia Nghị High School at age 15 after achieving high marks on the Higher Secondary Education Exam. Through his recognized assiduousness, he excelled in math-related subjects and physics and attained sufficient grades on other subjects. In 1973, he obtained his Bachelor's for electrical engineering with a minor in computer science at Mã Hữu Tài College.
At 22, he sought employment at Nhiên Long Electronics where he specialized on designing electronic components and circuits. He then transferred to Helios Informatics three years later, deciding to develop his computer science abilities further by working at a laboratory dedicated to his side discipline. In an interview with Syntax, Bằng stated that he "had emerging regrets on his minor" since he had not done much to apply it into practice, and that his job at Helios helped to "put it into good use." Indeed, it was during this job that he began to invest himself into network hardware. Such was so when he pursued a master's at the Kontin Institute of Technology where he produced his thesis on network and computer electronics in 1984, and received his Ph.D. at Minh Vuong University six years later.
Business Career
Eupraxia Networks
In 1994, while on vacation in Tân Ðinh , Bằng met Lê Duy Luận and Chung Minh Tiến. Luận was a computer scientist and Tiến a professor of electrical engineering. While conversing with each other after lunch, Bằng ruminated and expressed the idea of forming a company dedicated to networking via packets. Subsequently, after securing a seed fund totaling Ѧ10 million in 1996, they founded Eupraxia Networks in Socai , and Bằng was positioned as the company's chief technology officer (CTO), on the consensus of "knowing and producing networking hardware the best."
As CTO, Bằng worked on the design, architecture and production of the Eupraxia O31 router, as well as its overall development, which earned him the Nguyễn Minh Thuyết Innovator's Prize in 1999. He also designed and oversaw the development of the Eupraxia T series of routers, the CRED ethernet switchers and their respective operating systems alongside Luận. He eventually stepped down on 17 July 2006 to pursue other ventures, but consented to be a senior adviser to the company.
Cryptopylos Security
In 2008, Bằng founded Cryptopylos Security with the purpose of providing security solutions whether hardware or software. With his expertise, however, he emphasized more on hardware. According to Syntax, it was because of the advantages hardware-based encryption retained over that of software. Bằng was then made CEO and CTO of this company. In this career, Bằng had designed encryption hardware that mostly implemented and utilized the AES instruction set, particularly the Euergetes cryptographic accelerators and Tryphon processors, and also contributed to their assistant software. However, in 2013, Bằng would experience financial troubles. When the HaughtYam ransomware attack occurred since 10 September 2013, the malware exposed a zero-day vulnerability in the Tryphon 571 software, which inadvertently lead it to encrypt vital data files and lock the entire computer system. In the aftermath of the outbreak, Cryptopylos suffered an approximately 29% loss of its shares, which affected Bằng. Taking responsibility for the setback, Bằng would eventually step down as CEO on 17 September 2013.
Professorship
In 2015, Bằng was employed as a professor at Minh Vuong University, focusing on computer engineering, software engineering and information security. During classes, he would ensure that his mistakes from Tryphon 571 were mentioned, and serve as a lesson for students.
Personal Life
Bằng is currently married to Quách Thục Nhi, an accountant, and they currently live in Socai. They currently have 1 son named Quyết and 1 daughter named Thủy.
