The Republic of Khatay (Arabic: Jumhuria al Khaṭāy, Turkish: Hatay Cumhuriyeti, Armenian: Hanrapetut’yun Hatay) is a sovereign republic located in Western Asia, bordered by Syria and Turkey. The country is largely coastal and hilly, being located on the Mediterranean and bisected by the Nur Mountains. The history of Khatay has been punctuated by violence and instability; the nation was born out of a rebellion against France to prevent the planned annexation of the region by Turkey, the civilian government was overthrown by Nationalist Army Officers in 1964, Turkey invaded the country in 1975, which in turn started a Civil War within the country as the government fled to Syria. The Civil War ended following Turkish withdrawal in 1981, and a US-led United Nations intervention in 1982. Jordanian-led peace negotiations were able to bring about a full peace agreement in 1984, with relatively free and fair elections following the next year.
Khatay is a unitary republic and a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement.
