History

Early History

The oldest traces of human existence in the area of the present-day Nordland date back to the Middle Paleolithic era. Neolithic farming settlements appeared in the valleys around 5300 BC.

The Tein culture flourished during the late Iron Age, from around 450 BC—possibly under some influence of both the Ankaran and Antranobylan civilisations. One of the most important tribal groups in the Phaltian region were the Nords. In 58 BC, at the Battle of Einmeer, the tribes were defeated thereby bringing the region into a sort of unified state. By 15 BC, The Nords had conquered the entirety of the Phatian area. The Nordlanders came into contact with The Ankaran merchants who controlled mist of the Ankaran sea, The area now called the Seeland Province was conquered by the Nords in AD 450.

Foundation of The Holtzer Dynasty

The family, from which the Grand Duchy was founded, originally came from Nordbrücken in the Royal county of Treiveth which they had possessed from at least 1112. The Holtzers acquired land, spreading their influence through intermarriage throughout the land of the Nords. As these territories were all held in feudal tenure from more senior feudal lords, particularly various branches of the other main royal dynasties in the country, the Holtzer dynasty was unable to meet a primary requirement to qualify for a seat in the Nordlandic parliament.

This changed when Francis I of the Holtzer dynasty who had married Ann of Seeland in 1641 inherited the Seelander seat in the Nordlandic parliament, in the next few years he would use this influence to make the Holtzer dynasty the most important in The Nordland.

The Birth of The Grand Duchy

On 16 January 1832, as The Holtzer dynasty had been the mist powerful royal family in The Nordland for thd past 150 years the current head of the Holtzer dynasty Duke Henry IV wrote a letter to the Landtag (which was reformed in 1762) in this letter he wrote explaining why under his rule the nation could prosper. The motion was put to vote and the Landtag decided almost unanimously to award him the of Grand Duke. This is known as the act of Federation.

The Republican Revolts

In the early 1920s thanks to a deteriorating economic situation and poor crop yields the Nordlandic people became more and more angry with the Royal Family who had built themselves a brand new palace on the outskirts of Nordbrücken. On the 18th of march 1922 The Nordlandic Republican Party was founded by Albert Grüzmann, a welders son and intellectual from Einmeer who had become deeply annoyed by the way that the royal family were treating their people. Over time he came to want a Nordlandic Republic. His party faired badly in the polls and Grüzmann died without seeing his ideal gain success politically. However, by 1924 Grüzmann's ideal for a Republic had become widespread and seeing no success politically Grüzmann's successor his daughter, Marie Grüzmann founded the Republican mivement's military wing. They began attacking royal events and disrupting every day life. The Nordlandic armed forces went on the hunt for them as the violence became more widespread.

It was clear that the monarchy had to change, through the act of constitution The Nordlandoc Landtag forcefully limited the power of the Monarch and making The Nordland a constitutional monarchy.
