Puerto Rico, officially called the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, is the 58th state to enter the Union; being admitted to the Union on June 9, 1960. The state comprises the former territories of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. It shares maritime borders with the British Overseas Territory of the British Virgin Islands and the American states of Dominica and . The capital is San Juan, located on the main island of Puerto Rico. The state is known to speak English, Spanish, Danish, French, Taino, and many creoles languages; this is reflected with its diverse culture with a blend of American, Hispanic, European, and Caribbean customs.
