L'hymne à la Liberté (Estmerish: The Hymn to Freedom) is the national anthem of the Republic of Île d'Émeraude. It was written and composed during the Great War in support of Emeraudian independence from Gaullican colonial rule. It was declared the national anthem of the Republic shortly after independence by Lou Dubois in March 1953.

History

  • written by Emeraudian nationalist Paul Coulomb, stressing freedom from Gaullican colonial rule
  • composed in cooperation with Frédéric Camille, a Gaullois anti-functionalist and notable composer
  • adopted as anthem by Dubois
  • some controversy over the second verse that paints Gaullica in an imperialist light

Symbolism

Lyrics

Gaullican original Official Estmerish translation
First Verse
Toi, Liberté, Liberté que nous aimons

Toi, Liberté, Liberté que nous voulons

Sois notre espoir et notre force

Sois notre joie, notre bonheur

Nous pourrons chanter chaque jour plus haut

Chanter chaque jour plus loin

Chanter joyeusement cet hymne de foi

Liberté, Liberté, je crois en Toi

Liberté, Liberté, sois notre loi

Ô Toi qui peux donner l'espoir

Ô Toi qui peux sonner la joie

Ô Liberté, Liberté que nous aimons

Sois toujours plus près de nous

Sois toujours plus près de nos cœur

You, Liberty, Liberty we love

You, Freedom, Freedom we want

Be our hope and our strength

Be our joy, our happiness

We could sing each day higher

Sing each day further

Joyfully sing this hymn of faith

Freedom, Freedom, I believe in You

Liberty, Liberty, be our law

O You who can give hope

O You who can ring joy

O Freedom, Freedom that we love

Always be closer to us

Always be closer to our hearts

Second Verse
Loin de nous l'esclavage

Loin de nous les prisons

Plus jamais de privilèges

Loin de nous le colonialisme

Loin de nous le temps des tyrannies

Nous chanterons toujours ton nom, "Liberté"

Nous croyons en Toi

Away from us, slavery

Away from us, prisons

Never again privileges

Away from us, colonialism

Away from us, the time of tyrannies

We shall always sing your name, "Liberty"

We believe in you

Third Verse
Toi, Liberté, Liberté que nous aimons

Sois notre espoir et notre force

Sois notre joie, notre bonheur

Nous pourrons chanter chaque jour plus haut

Chanter joyeusement cet hymne de foi

Liberté, Liberté, je crois en Toi

Liberté, Liberté, sois notre loi

Ô Toi qui peux donner l'espoir

Ô Toi qui peux sonner la joie

Ô Liberté, Liberté que nous aimons

Sois toujours plus près de nous

Sois toujours plus près de nos cœur

Be our hope and our strength

Be our joy, our happiness

We could sing each day higher
