Aegelia, officially the Aegelian League (Aegelian: Συμμαχία της Αιγελία), is an island nation located in the southern Galene Sea. The country lies on the boundaries between Occidental and Oriental Auressia and has historically acted as a key strategic and cultural link between the two sides of the continent. Aegelia is located on an archipelago consisting of over 2,000 islands, though much of the country's population lives on the 3 largest islands: Savolia, Two and Three. The capital and largest city of the country Astros is located on the western coast of Savolia.
Aegelia traces its origins back to ancient times where various maritime and trading city-states or polis competed for dominance across the archipelago. Over time these entities would come under the control and influence of the Sabarine Empire which used the islands to extend its mercantile influence acorss the Galene Sea and to other continents within the northern hemisphere. Following independence, various Sabarine successor states looked to retain their control of the region, only for Aegelia to once again fracture into feuding principalities, republics and city states. The divided nature of the region however allowed for foreign empires to gain a foothold within the region and secure their influence across the Galene Sea. It wasn't until the mid-Seventeenth century and the Savolian Revolution that the remaining independent states would unite to form the Aegelian League, gradually driving out foreign influence from the region and declaring an independent Confederal Republic. Over time however, this republic would come under the influence of a dictatorship that would lead to greater political centralisation. Nevertheless, democracy would return to Aegelia within the late 1980s following a peaceful revolution, leading to the emergence of the modern nation state.
