The Soviet people or simply Soviets are the citizens and nationals of the Soviet Union. As a diverse country containing a plurality of different ethnic groups, religions and backgrounds, the term "Soviet" does not describe an ethnic group but is used as an umbrella term to describe the population living within the Soviet Union as well as Soviets living abroad. The largest ethnic group included within the Soviet people are the Russians, whom make up 45% of the Soviet population.
