The Democratic Socialist Caucus (Ghaillish: Cugais Shóisialach Dhaonlathach, abbreviated DSC, CSD or DSC-CSD) is a political party in Lorcania. Considered among the four major parties, the DSC espouses democratic socialism, progressivism, eco-socialism and social democracy. Since 2018 it has been led by Ambrós Ó Bairr, who has also emerged as its presidential candidate.
In 1982, an electoral alliance was formed between the Progressives, the long-standing voice of the Lorcanian left, and the Labor Party, the voice of the trade union movement. Along with the smaller Socialist Current, the parties merged on May Day 1991 as the Progressive and Socialist Labor Party, adopting the current name two years later. Under the leadership of Conán Ó Banáin and Summer Moore in the 1990s, the party became the voice of urban voters, and by the 2000s the party under Brandon Murray and Michael Armstrong had surpassed the Countryside Alliance in seat share. Under Orla Mhic Breislin, the party solidified its status by taking control of the Na Naoimh legislature. Current leader Ó Bairr was elected in 2018, leading the party to become the largest in the Kingswood legislature.
Ideologically, the party is positioned on the left of Lorcanian politics. The party considers itself democratic and eco-socialist, progressive and social democratic. The party is comprised of a number of factions, generally either centre-left or outwardly left-wing. Feminism, civil rights, official bilingualism, environmentalism, cultural liberalism, pacifism and trade unionism are key influences on the party.
The Democratic Socialists are generally strongest in urban and cosmopolitan areas, and towns and villages with large working class communities. Membership is mixed, with both a university educated and student contingent, and a significant working class presence.
