The sceptre is the symbol of an Anx's status

Anx or Anxon is a title given to male monarchs under specific traditions. The feminine form is Ansa, but it has not always been used and many female rulers have used the male form. It has been compared as an equivalent rank to rex and is often translated as king.

Etymology

Anx comes from the Settentrian "ἄναξ" meaning leader or master.

History

Some of the first monarchs in Erdara and Northern Cardia used titles derived from Proto-Hesurian "kunungaz" meaning someone of the family. In practical terms, this meant an position of leadership in a kinship group. As the political systems of Western Gaia became more complex, many kinship groups might exist under the leadership of a single ruler. The paramount ruler or high king could expect a tribute from other kingship groups, but had relatively little influence over the laws and customs of the majority of their subjects. Many of these states had contact with or were themselves tributaries of the Settentrian Empire from South Cardia, which was substantially more centralized and authoritarian than tribal states. As a result, many Erdaran and Cardish rulers adopted titles based on Settentrian concepts of kingship. The most common were ἄναξ and ἄρχων.

The specific interpretation of kingship now known as Anx required certain issues to be brought to the high king rather than intermediate or local officials. Initially this expansion of powers was limited to questions of spiritual health, since it was ultimately the Anx's responsibility to ensure every community access to an Apothecary. The powers of the Anx quickly expanded, however, as the monarch began to grant many different organizations--called Adelthon--the right to petition their courts directly. At the same time, the Anx limited or expanded the authority of specific nobles and officers to hear petitions.

Giginaikia

Giginaikia was the practice of Anxes forgoing marriage to women in favor of their relationship to Gaia, the world or the realm as a concept, and bearing heirs only through concubines.
