Agarntrop has a federalised system, and as a result there is no blanket law regarding the death penalty, and the use of the practise varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Abolitionist: Capital punishment has been formally abolished by statute or constitution.
Abolitionist in peacetime: Capital punishment has been formally abolished except for crimes committed under exceptional circumstances (such as wartime).
Abolitionist in practice: Capital punishment is legal but the jurisdiction has not executed anyone during the last 10 years and is believed to have a policy or established practice of not carrying out executions.
Retentionist: Capital punishment is legal and is used for ordinary offences.

Jurisdiction Method(s) Year of last execution Year abolished Notes
Agarna Central Lethal Injection 1990 In effect The death penalty is permitted for murder and treason against the state by the Criminal Code. Lethal Injection, introduced in 1988, has been the sole method authorised since 2008 after allegations the firing squad was inhumane, however it has only been used once in 1990. In total there has been 23 executions since the adoption of the Agarn Federal Constitution in 1970, 22 by firing squad and 1 by lethal injection. There has been a formal indefinite stay on all executions ordered by the Attorney General since 1994.
Agarna del Norte Firing Squad and Electrocution 1971 1979 Passages of the criminal code providing death as the punishment for aggravated murder, large scale drug-trafficking and rebellion were removed in 1979 by the state legislature. Firing squad and electrocution were used in executions before abolition, with the last execution taking place by firing squad in 1971. The state constitution was amended to prohibit capital punishment in 2008, preventing reinstatement.
Agarna del Oeste Firing Squad 1965 1970 The death penalty was abolished upon federalisation in 1970, with the new state penal code containing no mention of the practise. The last execution to take place within the state's modern-day borders was during the Agarn Empire in 1965 that used a firing squad. The state constitution, passed in 1972, banned the practise, therefore preventing reinstatement.
Agarna del Sur Lethal Injection or Firing Squad 1998 2004 (Murder)
In Effect (Treason)
A law widely considered archaic and that has never been applied in modern history still technically allows the death penalty for treason against the state, however the death penalty was abolished for ordinary crimes in 2004 by the state legislature, shortly after the attorney general signed a moratorium on all executions in 1999. Lethal injection was introduced in 1989, prior to that a firing squad was the sole method. In total there were 307 executions between federalisation in 1970 and de-facto abolition in 1999. Out of those, 275 were carried out by firing squad and 32 by lethal injection. Agarna del Sur's abnormally high execution rate was usually attributed to its high population, the fact that the death penalty was mandatory for murder rather than optional until it was forced to change that by a federal court injunction in 1992, and a law that persons sentenced to death had only one appeal, which was eventually repealed by the state legislature in 1986.
Agarna Occidental Lethal Injection 2017 In effect The State Penal Code allows capital punishment for aggravated murder, terrorism, child murder, mass murder, insurrection, perjury causing wrongful execution, organised drug trafficking, racketeering, recidivist arson endangering life, recidivist kidnapping endangering life and recidivist sex offences endangering life. The last execution was in 2017, and although no formal moratorium has been put in place on executions since then, the attorney general has not ordered any executions for the forseeable future due to an embargo on supplying drugs used in executions initiated by many abolitionist nations and organisations on Agarntrop, after it was revealed that a Crylantan company was unintentionally supplying execution drugs to Agarna Occidental under the pretext they were being used in smaller quantities in life-saving medical treatment, leading some to believe it will amount to a de-facto moratorium. Lethal injection was introduced in 2001 alongside the existing methods of firing squad and rarely used electrocution and became the sole method in 2015. In total there have been 38 executions since federalisation in 1970, 23 by firing squad, 14 by lethal injection and 1 by electrocution.
Agarntrop City Firing Squad 1966 1968 The death penalty was abolished by a city-wide ordinance even before federalisation in 1968. After federalisation, the state's new penal code also affirmed the decision to abolish the practice, passed in 1970. The last execution in the city/state was in 1966 during the 1966 Agarn Coup by firing squad. The state constitution, passed in 1971, listed capital punishment as a violation of human rights, therefore preventing reinstatement.
Eblanca Firing Squad 1964 1984 The death penalty was abolished by a vote in the state legislature in 1984 that removed references to the practise in the state penal code that was introduced in 1971 following federalisation that included articles permitting the death penalty for aggravated murder, terrorism and treason. No execution was ever carried out as a result of this law, the last execution taking place before federalisation in 1964 by firing squad. An amendment to the state constitution in 2014 prohibited the reinstatement of capital punishment.
Laños Lethal Injection or Firing Squad 1997 2004 (Murder)
2018 (treason)
Laños was subject to the same death penalty laws as Agarna del Sur as a province of it until it achieved statehood in 2017, and consequently introduced a new penal code and constitution that both prohibited capital punishment for all crimes a year later.
Territorio Amarillo Lethal Injection or Firing Squad 2003 In effect The penal law allows the death penalty for aggravated murder and treason. The state introduced lethal injection as an optional execution method alongside the firing squad in 2006, however it has never actually been used, as there has been an official moratorium on executions in place since 2004. The last execution in 2003 was carried out by firing squad. In total, there has been seven executions since federalisation in 1970, all carried out by firing squad.
Tierra Naranja Firing Squad or Electrocution 2019 In effect The law prescribes the death penalty for murder, treason, perjury resulting in wrongful execution, drug trafficking, kidnapping, rape, attempting to commit a capital offence, aiding or abetting a capital offence, and being party to a conspiracy to commit a capital offence. The last execution took place in 2019, and Tierra Naranja is currently the only state with executions scheduled in 2020, with one scheduled in May and a second in November. Tierra Naranja is and has been since 2006 the only state which does not allow lethal injection, instead mandating criminals to choose between the firing squad and electrocution. It is unlikely that the state will introduce lethal injection anytime soon, due to the difficulty that occured in Agarna Occidental with obtaining execution drugs. In total there have been 87 executions since federalisation, 79 of which have been via firing squad and 8 via electrocution.
