List of Peerages in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec

Jump to navigation Jump to search

The peerage of the Royal Kingdom of Quebec is a legal system of life and hereditary titles that incorporate noble ranks in the Quebecois honours systems. By the name of their title they are considered peers of their realm, but is not always the case, for in some cases their surname would supplant that of their realm in titles.

Since the incorporation of the honour system, defined by the Royal Act of Union Among Quebecois Peoples in 1677, the peerage has been open to Quebecois citizens. Citizens of the autonomous territories and colonies of the Quebecois Empire and later the Quebecois Commonwealth were also given Quebecois peerages until the Commonwealth Act of 1947.

Given its relatively late establishment of ranks, the ranks of the Quebecois peerage remain conventional. The ranks of the Quebecois peerage are Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron, with hereditary peerages applicable in all ranks and life peerages from Earl to Baron. The system, in recent times, is simplified, with the last non-royal dukedom was created in 1921, with the last marquessate 1948. The remainder of the ranks continues to be issued, even though Earldom, largely in favour of life peerage and the lower ranks of peerage issued, have been issued fairly irregularly and increasingly at a rare frequency.
