Education is mandatory for all children from ages 5 to 16.

The school year in North Ottonia begins in January (generally on the third week of the month) and is divided into three fourteen-week trimesters, separated by 3-week breaks in the spring and summer, and a 4-week break between academic years.

History of Education in North Ottonia

Modern Education in North Ottonia

The North Ottonian standard school system operates in three stages.

Primary School

Primary School consists of five academic years, with children of age 5 enrolling and graduating at age 11.

Lower Secondary School

Lower Secondary School consists of five academic years, with students from ages 11 thru 16. When a child completes Lower Secondary School, they have completed the extent of their mandatory education. However, in practice the vast majority of students enroll in and complete Upper Secondary School.

Upper Secondary School

Upper Secondary School consists of four academic years, encompassing students between 16 and 20 years of age. Here, education starts to become more specialized, and a wider range of electives and pre-professional education is available to students. In practice at least 90% of North Ottonian children enroll in an Upper Secondary school, and while many opt to drop out at age 18, the vast majority graduate.
