The Parliament of Gemma Insulam is the highest legislative body in the country, all government power is stems by acts granted by parliament. While consisting of the Crown, House of Commons, and House of Peers, the parliament is in practice of bicameral system where the lower house (House of Commons) and the upper house (House of Lords) conduct the work of the day.

Location & Building

Parliamennt is located in the capital city of Christchurch in what was once the Princely Palace, between 1803-1844, where the monarch held court.

During the Civil of 1847, the palace was occupied by General Sir Leslie Armstrong and the Royalist leadership while the Grand Prince Louis I and the royal family retreated to the north.

In 1848, after the end of the Civil War and fall of the republican movement, Grand Prince Louis I, Chancellor William Kane, and General Sir Leslie Armstrong drafted by the the Constitution of 1849 which officially renamed the palace as the Parliament of Gemma Insulam and the seat for the national legislature. Between 1849 and 1851 the palace went over extensive renovations to house the newly established chambers.

House of Commons

The House of Commons is the elected representive chamber of parlaiment. Commonly known as the commons or the lower, the chamber is primary house of debate and legialative actions.

Consisting of 650 members, knowns as Members of Parliament, all legislative acts of parliament must orginate from the commons before is to recieve royal assent.
