Gaunt (Buckish: Gōnt) is the largest city in the shire of Bencumbscir, and second largest in Buckland, . Gaunt is a major port and it lies at the northernmost point of Gaunt Water at the confluence of the Rivers Bencumb and Cof. The city, which is a unitary authority, has an estimated population of 311,678. In the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Euclea, with some 30,000 people in 1300, and has been Buckland's busiest port since.

Etymology

Gaunt is the Estmericised version of Gōnt, which itself is believed to come from the Swatho-Tenic goddess Gontia. Gontia is believed to have originally been the Tenic deity of the Cof River, before she was adopted by the settling Swathish people. Their conversion to Sotirianity erased most records of the goddess, but the name of the town remained.
