Dai Tōsō

A Dai Tōsō (大闘争) is an official professional sumo tournament in Dohyo no Deshi. There are five held each year on the Rygalic Calendar. These are regular displays of both sport and display that dedicated wrestlers from Dohyo No Deshi, and outside, may compete for prize and fame. A literal translation of Dai Tōsō is "Grand (or great) Struggle" and it takes on both a sport aspect as well as an significant culture experience.

Dai Tōsō last for 15 days. Sumo wrestlers ranked in the top two divisions (makuuchi and jūryō) wrestle once each day, , approximately once every alternate day. The lower division matches begin first and usually this is also where foreign wrestlers stay. It is considered a great honor for a foreign wrestler to qualify to to wrestler the upper ranks of Dohyo no Deshi society. Ranks within Dohyo no Deshi follow traditional structure, however foreign wrestler ranks are determined several weeks prior in a series of qualifier matches known as "Haichi" (配置).

The goal for most wrestlers is to achieve a majority of wins and thus ensure a promotion for the next tournament or certain privileges within sumo society if on is a foreigner. In addition for each division there is a championship prize for the wrestler with the most wins at the end and this can be a big thing for domestic and foreign wrestlers looking for fame or prestige in sumo society.
