A variety of martial arts are popular in Sharifistan including Judo, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Sharifistani Dodging, fencing and a variety of types of wrestling.

History

Martial arts in some form or another has existed in Sharifistan since ancient times, they were promoted during the Ottoman period and for all of subsequent Sharifistani history.

Sporting competitions

Sharifistan is involved a variety of national, regional and international competitions. All cities, most towns and some villages also have local competitions, especially in traditional Turkish wrestling.

Military

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Sharifistani Dodging are both part of Sharifistani military training for a variety of roles. MMA is also part of basic training in all branches of the Sharifistani military.

Amongst women

Judo is especially popular amongst women, in Sharifistani culture women are encouraged to train in martial arts to defend themselves from sexual assault or home invasion (especially amongst the nobility for whom defence of the home and sexual "honour" are paramount).
