A Short Political History

Ardalia's Democratic Party commanded a resounding majority of the chamber from 1910-1935. During the Great War, a national unity government was formed to see the nation through the conflict. In the aftermath of the war, political instability and paralysis gripped the nation. Though the Democrats still had the highest number of seats, they had attempted to establish coalitions with the Moderates, only for those to break down a few months later. Frenlo Letzek would overthrow the First Republic in 1945 and democracy would not return until his ouster and execution in 1983.

The Democratic Party regained their former position at the top of Ardalia's political system for most of the 1980's but were removed in a snap election in 1991 when the Moderate opposition promised to formally restore relations with the Caropsyne Pontanore. They were successful in their pledge with the signing of the Treaty of Taerisz in 1992. Moderates would control the Premiership throughout the 1990's, but decided to form a coalition with the much weaker Democrats during the four-year civil war to ensure democracy survived. Both they and the Democrats would be toppled in 2000 when it was determined that the now-banned Caropsyne intelligence service, the Damosca, had been influencing the-then moderate Maldian Government had been involved in covertly supporting the Ardalian Nationalist Front in their insurrection against the Government.

During the last year of the civil war, many began questioning the policies at home and realized that the liberalism they had enjoyed generations earlier was much more prefered over the expediency of economic progress. The weakness of the Democrats, who were now viewed as unable to govern, and the Moderates having lost all credibility with a large contingent of the population - it was time for a new party to dominante the political system: the Socialists.

In the wake of the Maldian Government's demise, the people of the Pontanore elected their first-ever Socialist, Miria Seranoda. The Ardalian Socialist Party leadership under Leno Frikasz and Ardor Raszan, had been secretly working with her to modify her policies to work at home. In the Ardalian elections in 2000, the Socialists would win the largest block of seats and with it the Premiership. To ensure the security of their policies, they formed an coalition with the Greens (and the Democrats would supply their votes). Ardor Raszan succeeded Frikasz and expanded the Socialist majority where a formal coalition was no longer required but maintained the ongoing alliance with the Greens and Democrats through policy agendas and vote-sharing agreements. The Socialists continue to lead the Assembly today.
