Demographics

Since the General Abolishment of Serfdom, Marnov's society is divided into five classes:

  • The Landed Nobility, composing five families who rule over roughly 10% of the Kingdom's population. They have both political and economic autonomy within their respective fiefdoms, making them essentially autonomous nations.
  • The Yunkers, landed yet formally titleless nobility who settled in the region from Budyobyshevsk as "Settler-Lords" in the Renaissance era. Their territories fall fully under the All-Union Constitution. Some hundred or so Yunker families are recognised controlling mostly agricultural estates.
  • The Cossacks, composing currently nine clans. Mainly descendants of soldiers settled in the region by the early Suvarovan Emperors, they nowadays makeup some 20% of the population and are fairly dispersed.
  • Marnov's Assorted Nobility. Roughly 3% of the Kingdom's population descended of the three clans in Marnovian City Politics back in its republican days.
  • Commoners, some 80% of the population.

The exact ranking between these is undefinied. The current constitution, while recognising the existence of status groups, insists that they are all equal, despite the fact that in many legal circumstances, they are not. The Assorted Nobility and the Budyobyshevskan Yunkers have been at odds for centuries. The Cossacks, despite having been settled in the region on Imperial orders, are commonly considered to rank even below the commoners on account of their low economic status.
