Haven is a corporate republic in east-central Iteria. The precurssor to the modern state of Haven was the Royal Iteria Company, a corporation chartered by consolidation of several rival Korovan trading companies in the mid-18th. The RIC oversaw a monopoly over Korovan trade in Iteria for 200 years, diversifying into multiple commercial and industrial activities, including international trade, shipbuilding, and both the production and distribution of Iterian coffee beans and cocoa. By the turn of the 20th century, it had effectively transformed itself from a corporate entity into a state in in its own right, governing a portion of central Iteria and amassing a sizable army to defend its ships and colonial possessions.
Haven Co., the successor to the RIC, operates independently of the Korovan crown and effectively serves as the government of the modern nation-state of Haven. The Council of Directors is the companies governing board, composed of a Governor, Deputy Governor, and directors elected by the company’s domestic shareholders. Because few within the indigenous tribes have the capital to invest in the company, large swaths of Haven’s population are disenfranchised in what is effectively a racial caste system. Haven is therefore a corporate republic, in which all aspects of society are privatized, and a plutocracy, with political influence directly proportional to wealth. The Haven Security Force is the company’s private army and the nation’s sole military and police force. A full term of service in the HSF grants a citizen of Haven one share in the company, and therefore a lifetime of dividends. The company has been criticized for using this incentive to exploit the impoverished native community and force them into military service.
