List of active Menghean Navy ships

Jump to navigation Jump to search

This page contains a list of active Menghean Navy ships, and reflects the state of the Menghean Navy at the end of 2021. Given the rapid pace of Menghean shipbuilding in the early 2020s, these numbers may quickly become outdated, especially for newer ship types.

Comparison of classification schemes

This list groups Menghean warships by the hull types most commonly applied to them in Anglian-language literature - i.e., as cruisers, destroyers, frigates, or corvettes. The Menghean Navy does not use these classifications, instead using a classification scheme which groups them around specialized roles. The Menghean grouping of major surface combatants, which is especially different from the conventional Anglian style, is summarized below.

  • Destroyers (guchugham) are surface combatants which specialize in attacking enemy surface ships. In this respect, they still follow the literal Menghean etymology of guchugham, a ship which pursues and destroys its target. They may have some anti-air and anti-submarine armament, but these weapons are only adequate for self-defense and may be inadequate even in that role. They were originally divided into missile destroyers (yudotan guchugham) with heavy anti-ship missiles and artillery destroyers (daepo guchugham) with 130mm guns and torpedoes, though the last ships of the latter type were retired in 1988. In the 2000s the classification was also expanded to include coastal destroyers (yŏnan guchugham), which specialize in engaging light missile craft and bombarding shore targets and are comparable in role to a littoral combat ship. These are further divided into medium coastal destroyers and small coastal destroyers.
  • Escort ships (howiham) are surface combatants which specialize in defending a high-value surface unit from air and submarine threats. They currently account for the bulk of large Menghean surface combatants. Originally, the classification howiham stood on its own, but the type has since been divided into main force escort ships (juryŏk howiham) and outer escort ships (oechung howiham). The former are designed to sit near the center of a battlegroup and defend a wide area, while the latter can be positioned at the edge of a battlegroup or along a threat axis. They are roughly analogous to guided missile destroyers and guided missile frigates, respectively.
  • Anti-submarine patrol ships (dae-jamsuham chogyeham) are a special class of surface combatant which specialize in anti-submarine warfare. In contrast to escort ships, which accompany a battlegroup or other high-value target, these ships are designed to conduct independent anti-submarine patrols in areas with limited aircraft and missile threats. They are classified by size into large anti-submarine patrol ships (daehyŏng dae-jamsuham chogyeham), which serve as flotilla leaders and carry more anti-submarine helicopter assets; medium anti-submarine patrol ships (junghyŏng dae-jamsuham chogyeham), which conduct long-range ocean-going patrols; and small anti-submarine patrol ships (sohyŏng dae-jamsuham chogyeham), which patrol coastal areas, especially outside naval bases and strategic ports. Confusingly, foreign literature inconsistently labels large anti-submarine patrol ships as destroyers, cruisers, or helicopter carriers, and groups together medium and small anti-submarine patrol ships as corvettes, sometimes treating the Yugnju class as frigates due to their increased missile armament.

Because these types do not always map neatly onto the cruiser-destroyer-frigate-corvette spectrum, direct comparisons of ship numbers across navies can be misleading. In 2010, for example, the Menghean Navy contained 43 "destroyers," but 26 of these were yudotan guchugham and seven were Hyŏngnam-class howiham. Only 10 were modern guided missile destroyers with vertical launch SAM systems, and only six had the universal Mark 41 Vertical Launching System. Thus, complaints in the Anglian press about a "destroyer gap" were misleading. Similarly, the Insŏng-class destroyers displace nearly 50% more than as the Chanjok Jachido-class cruisers at full load, and the Chunchŏn-class frigates displace about 50% more than the Chŏndong-class destroyers. The "corvette" category also lumps together an especially wide range of diverse mission types. Users of this chart should proceed with caution when comparing ship numbers on this page with those of different navies.

In some cases, multiple designations appear in Anglian sources. The Hasŏ class ships, for example, have been referred to as cruisers and helicopter carriers, and the Insŏng-class have been referred to as destroyers and cruisers. In these cases, the more commonly used designation appears in the table and on the title of the ship page.
