The Serene Kingdom of Lombardio-Modena is a feudal-monarchist nation located in the Deep Periphery, abutting the anti-spinward edge of the Lyran Alarion Province, as defined by Comstar's Explorer Corps. The 'territory' of the Kingdom extends approximately 300 light years in diameter. With the exception of the Hanseatic League, the Kingdom has developed into a surprisingly robust state for one in the Deep Periphery, and has industry and wealth to rival some provinces of the Inner Sphere itself.

Early Settlements & the Era of Danmaku (2602-2765)

The first settlements in what would become Lombardio-Modena originated not from the Free Worlds League or Lyran Commonwealth as much of the later population would- but instead from the Draconis Combine. Nominally, a small fleet of dissatisfied and disgruntled citizens were planning to move to the frontiers of Combine space- mostly yakuza, burakumin and restive Ainu groups- but the colony ships suffered a freak jump accident and many of them simply vanished Without a trace, but for this particular effort, the ship of note was the *Yume*, which suffered a jump failure of such a magnitude they were slingshotted in the opposite direction of their original path- beyond the reaches of the Lyran Commonwealth even. This was in 2602

Unfortunately, although they came out of the misjump in one piece, the unfortunate colony ship was essentially stuck in an uncharted system that only had one potential planet that could be settled on. A salt world. Massive, continent-sized salt flats and treacherous mountain ranges were broken only by rare salt lakes and even rarer freshwater sources- and understandably the first few years of the settlement would prove to be the most precarious not only because of environmental concerns.

Evander Kazumichi, yakuza warlord and brutal tyrant before the arrival of the Count's fleet.

Trouble began rapidly as the disparate groups tried to coexist for their own sakes in the initial years after first landing, but the Yakuza elements among the colonists quickly began to brute force their way into essentially running the colonies as small bandit kingdoms early on. Fighting centered around the few freshwater sources, and as the brief of cooperation faded the planet quickly descended into low-tech conflict over water and slaves. This period would be known as the Era of Danmaku (Era of Bullet Hell).

Yomi-tsu-kuni as the initial settlers named it, sarcastically at first, but soon troublingly fitting, would descend into ignominious violence that would not break in the following 150+ years. During this time very few individuals of note seem to have been present, save for a few brief and powerful bandit kings- Evander Kazumichi briefly was on the cusp of uniting most of the planet during a violent and psychotic warpath, only to be killed by his favorite concubine as he slept in 2711. With his death, all of the violence and oppression spent trying to coerce the struggling planet under a single banner evaporated as his conquests quickly balkanized back to their pre-war status, more or less. The only real lasting impact this had was a significant weakening of the Yakuza elements- allowing some settlements to shift to more passive and normal governance by the descendents of the burakumin and the Ainu as well.

Pacification War & Stabilization (2765-2870)

By the time another group would reach Yomi-tsu-kuni, they would find a more or less collapsed society, only just barely surviving on the hostile salt world. The new arrivals were not explicitly settlers, no, this time the group that arrived did so in a multitude of vessels, forming a small and ramshackle flotilla. Made up of nearly a small planet of fleeing citizens, soldiers, and more from the Rim World Republic, this new group was led by a former planetary ruler, and noble, and the progenitor of the current Noble House that rules over the state, Count Giuseppe II Este, the planetary administrator for Custozza. Although hardly a figure of complete moral light, he had seen fit to begin preparing for an exodus as the approaching SLDF under Kerensky began to uproot the Rim Worlds Republic in order to destroy Amaris- this meant gathering what there was on the planet, technology, Weaponry, equipment, whatever could be fit onto the makeshift flotilla of jump ships and a few small warships, being done in little more then two months.

The fleet carried most of the important cargo on a handful of Carrack-class transports, but any space available was to be used- including aboard the flagship, the Count's personal League-class destroyer. By the time the fleet was gathered, it consisted of the following; - x1 Abbondante, League-class destroyer - x3 Bonaventure-class corvette - Unita - Splendore - Scopo - x3 Carrack-class transport

Altogether the fleet comprised perhaps no more than 10% of the planet's population, all crammed into whatever space they could occupy among cargo and equipment. A large portion of the space in the flotilla was taken up by the Rim Worlds 106th Amaris Legionnaires- the unit which Count Giuseppe was the CO for. With preparations complete and no news of the SLDF slowing its advance into the Republic, and even towards Custozza, the decision was eventually made to depart with who was on board and to leave the rest of the planet and its inhabitants and hope for the best. and the fleet touched off on April 6th, 2766 into the deep periphery and beyond the contact of the Inner Sphere for some years to come. By coincidence, the world they would eventually come to arrive at would be the very same as the Draconis settlers nearly a century earlier.

It would be by sheer coincidence that be makeshift fleet would overshoot many of the interceding systems and instead come to arrive directly in the system the Draconis ships had staggered into some hundred and fifty years earlier. Although the system was suitable, and there were at least three planets potentially habitable, the decision was made after finding the lingering debris from the colony ship in orbit to touch down on 'Yomi-tsu-kuni' or UP-01, uncharted planet 01, as the fleet referred to it. Instead of finding settlements thriving and human life making the best of the harsh environment, planetfall instead saw the gruesome discovery of one of many hundreds of thousands of bandit cities- Yakuza dominated fortresses of ramshackle make and run like massive prison-city-states. Hardly a man of completely upstanding morals, the Count- and his family and supporters were appalled by the reality they discovered and launched a rapid campaign of subjugation and liberation respectively against the yakuza bandits and for the sake of the oppressed locals under their yoke.

In a quick and brutal campaign that lasted no more than a few months, the still properly equipped and maintained forces under the Count smashed apart city after city, destroying the irregular forces with the Bandit Lords mustered with ease- thanks to the presence of the surprisingly robust Mechwarrior units fielded. Nothing of the sort had been seen on the planet, and besides some makeshift armored vehicles and the occasional dated field guns, nothing that the bandits fielded was even close to capable of handling what was being thrown at them. With their power structure destroyed, and the oppressed residents of the planet finally free, work began on reintegrating and settling the planet, working to undo years of damage and societal degradation while simultaneously trying to put down roots for a new community. Although lacking some of the heavier-duty equipment for planetary terraforming, what the flutua did have was a number of purification machines for saltwater, and a small number of machines meant to locally terraform a small area of an otherwise hostile region.

Giuseppe spent much of his time tending to matters pressing on his new home world, which he renamed to Lombardio- much of the early efforts were directed towards trying to come to an accommodation with the existing populace, made difficult by the defeated Bandits typically fading back into the mundane society and working back into a more secretive sort of subversive activity. Those previously stuck under the rule of the bandits were much more accommodating however, tired of years of strife and warfare, uncertainty and barbarity, most willingly accepted the new administration without qualm. A general introduction of more standardized laws and at least the framework of a parliamentary political system were laid out if not acted upon. Many of the more brutal customs of the former bandits were done away with, although distinctly enough the practice of slavery was quietly left to stand in the flurry of reforms.

The 20 to 30 years of his reign would prove to be developmental for the previously borderline inhospitable planet. The groundwork would be laid for a new capital, nestled against one of the few freshwater lakes on the planet, and with the limited terraforming machinery spending many years gradually reeling back must have be Salt Flats in order to allow for standard farming. A few other large cities would be founded, most on the ruins or base of existing ramshackle settlements, allowing the local residents to integrate quickly, although also allowing the disgruntled and subversive yakuza-bandits to worm into the cracks and establish themselves as a long-running problem, one that would only get worse with the fusion of incoming settlers from the Count's fleet, some of which were definitely criminal elements.

The foundations of many of the companies and industries that would eventually flourish were laid in this time, and although the planet itself was far from ideal for habitation, the capital world would prove to be absurdly abundant with all manner of natural resources, something that the previous settlers had been unable to utilize or recognize due to their descent into violence and barbarity. Also during this time the other habitable rule world in the system, one which had evaded the initial arrivals, was settled in earnest by other elements of the fleet, named Modena, and hence the name of the state to be- the Serene Kingdom of Lombardio-Modena.
