Mobido Atiku Maoube, usually referred to as Mobido Atiku, is a Lieutenant General within the Mabifian National Army. He is best known for his role as commander of Mabifian government forces within the Makanian Conflict since 2007, a role in which he has attracted accusations of war crimes due to his heavy-handed treatment of suspected insurgents and alleged ties to the Sans-Éclipses paramilitary. He received the nickname "tonton le pilleur" (Estmerish: Uncle pillager) as a result of his actions.
Early life
Mobido Atiku was born in Kangesare in 1967 to a family of factory workers. He dropped out of school at 18 and joined the army.
Career
A talented soldier with clan ties to much of the leadership of the regional armed forces, Atiku received early promotions and quickly ascended the ranks of the armed forces. He was soon deployed into the Makania region, where he allegedly served as the liaison between the national military and the Sans-Éclipses. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General due to his performance here.
In 1997, following Mahmadou Jolleh-Bande's rise to power and the breakdown of peace talks in Makania, Atiku was assigned the role of general commander of the Mabifian National Army within the region. Under his command, critics accuse that the government forces have bcome more violent and targetted civilians, a charge which Atiku categorically denies.
In 2011, soldiers entered several villages which were suspected to be centres of rebel activity and, under Atiku's command, kidnapped a child from every household. These children were not killed, but the People's Coalition for Makanian National Sovereignty were warned that if they did not release 20 captives the children would all be shot. News of this action broke across the world and criticism led to Jolleh-Bande ordering the release of the captives.
Atiku completed studies in strategic direction in Xiaodong in 2014. He was conferred the honorific title Maoubo, meaning "elder", in 2017 on his 50th birthday.
