1st-10th Foot

The first ten regiments were raised from 1843-1845. The first five regiments were named regiments sanctioned officially by Horse Guards. Starting with the sixth, regiments raised not by Horse Guards or high ranked nobles (Earls and Dukes) received no official name. Regiments such as the sixth that remained unnamed were given names based on the name of their colonels after the 1865 Perin Reforms.

More regiments began to be raised by lower-level aristocrats and rich sponsors and thus the majority of regiments within this bracket were unnamed. The 20th Foot was the first regiment to be named after its Colonel, James O'Reiley in this case. The Artisan's Regiment (the 16th), was the first of the tradesmen's regiments. These were units named after the guilds that sponsored their formation, following the formation of the first Territorial Army, this concept was revived as many men from specific trades joined together in Pals Battalions.
