The Brandtische Soldaten or the Brandtian Soldiers, colloquially Brandtians, was an Illusian mercenary army that was fielded, raised, and under the allegiance of the distinguished House of Brandt. It was created by the dynasty in 1430 to defend the family's economic and industrial properties across the Kingdom of Illusia as the Illusia-Neverendia War started, and as a consequence as well of the Brandt dynasty switching to arms manufacturing after their mercantile arm became defunct.
Eberhardt von Brandt, its founder, was trained in the arts of war, but had expressed disdain on the Illusian crown's military strength. As his family concentrated on weapons manufacturing, he created a small gathering between aspiring Illusian soldiers, and thus forming the catalyst on the creation of the Brandtische Soldaten. As time passed, the army grew to a point it rivalled the Illusian Army itself. When the Neverendian armies began the invasion of the Illusian homeland after their losses in Santhea, Eberhardt offered the Soldaten in service to the Illusian crown.
The royal government, in dire need of support, rented the Soldaten. The first actual battle was during the defence of Enigmastadt - the Battle of the Spree River, where the mercenaries repulsed a Neverendian offensive and giving the Illusian Army to retreat and regroup. Pleased by these results, the mercenaries became omnipresent on every battle in the Illusian theatre of the war. Realising their worth and competence, the Illusian crown paid the House of Brandt a large sum, and incorporated the mercenaries into the Illusian Army, becoming the Armeegruppe von Brandt.
Their incorporation into the Illusian Army and their reputation beforehand made them outperform every single Illusian military unit. This made them a role model to mostly everyone. The Armeegruppe von Brandt continued to play major key roles in the war, and remained prolific until the end of the war in 1660.
