The beginning of the North Abyaalan War, a direct result of the Maw Crisis catalysed the start of high-intensity combat between the coalition of Fyrland and Macchia, and the communist forces of Leo Terra. Volunteer forces from Hanhae and Dayashina, organised by hardline anti-communist figures Kazuo Kikuchi and Kim Ji-tae, played a substantial role in the war as combatants in support of Fyrland. The volunteer force consisted of fellow hardline anti-communists with military experience, particularly within the Hanhae War (1950-1953) and the Pan-Septentrion War (1937-1946), and still fell within the constraints of what was considered fighting age. Most of the volunteers aged between 25 and 28, comprising of the youngest participants in the Hanhae War, while leadership age averaged around 33 and 38, drawing from a range of experience from the PSW to the Hanhaean War.
The excess of East Hemithean volunteers joining the Fyrish efforts against communist Leo Terra is largely a result of the fact that rampant anti-communist policy and attitude already existed in Hanhae and Dayashina, due to the nearby existential threat from then-communist Menghe and Polvokia. Furthermore, there existed a long-standing historical ideological understanding and connection between the Fyrish and the Dayashinese, dating back to the 1920s in the form of anti-Casaterranism and continuing into the 1960s in the form of anti-communism. Organisers Kazuo Kikuchi and Kim Ji-tae reportedly had numerous connections to individuals of note in Fyrland who shared similar political views to them. When the war kicked off in 1961, they met in Nakazara to discuss the prospect of traveling to Fyrland on their own to participate in the war, but they quickly expanded the scope of their plans to include further volunteers. Conducting recruitment with discreet flyers, Kikuchi and Kim targeted former servicmen of the Hanhaean and Dayashinese militaries who at least met two of three categories - fighting age, anti-communist, experienced. Around 3,000 were raised initially, with a further 5,000 joining over the course of the war due to continued recruitment.
Although the governments of Hanhae and Dayashina never officially contributed material support to any belligerents in the North Abyaalan War, both diplomatically supported the anti-communist coalition, and notably made no efforts to stop any of the volunteers from departing to Fyrland and participating in the war. The conduct of the Hanhaean and Dayashinese volunteers has been repeatedly brought into question in the international community, being alleged to have committed several noteworthy massacres, and having received no punishment or condemnation from their respective governments. Furthermore, the histories of Kazuo Kikuchi and Kim Ji-tae have been scrutinised, with Kikuchi having been a former officer in D/ISOG in Khalistan with multiple standing allegations, and Kim being infamous for his ruthless conduct in the Hanhae War.
