The Hoterallia Self-Defense Forces (Hoterallian: 自衛軍, romanized: Jiei-gun; abbreviated HSDF), also known as the Hoterallian Armed Forces or Hoterallian Army, are the unified military forces of Hoterallia established in 1950. The self-defence forces consist of the Hoterallia Ground Self-Defense Force, the Hoterallia Naval Self-Defense Force, and the Hoterallia Air Self-Defense Force. They are controlled by the Ministry of Defence, with the Prime Minister as commander-in-chief.
After the Second Reunification War, the Imperial Hoterallian Armed Forces was deemed too "too imperialistic by nature of the spirit and culture of the Hoterallians", so they were disbanded and replaced by the early Hoterallian National Armed Force (ほてらじあ国軍, Hoterajia Kokugun), before being renamed into the Hoterallian Self-Defense Forces after the National Act of 1950 was signed. The HSDF is considered a peacekeeping force for the Second Empire as they face no real threats during their time of operation, they act as a standing army to protect the nation and its sovereignty, while the ground and naval forces would deal with internal threats and natural disasters.
Role in Hoterallian society
In the early days of the HSDF, it was the centre of public ridicule and criticism, as the thoughts of the population is to demilitarize the Empire, but the creation of the HSDF is the opposite.
But appreciation of the HSDF only continued to grow in the 1970s and 1980s, with over half of the respondents in a 1988 survey made by the HHK voicing an interest in the HSDF and over 76% indicating that they were favourably impressed while the majority (63.5%) of respondents were aware that the primary purpose of the HSDF was the maintenance of national security. The HSDF, therefore, continued to devote much of its time and resources to disaster relief (due to Hoterallian geographical location) and other civic actions. In addition, the HSDF participated in earthquake disaster prevention operations with its neighbour, San Calia. Especially sensitive to maintaining harmonious relations with communities close to defence bases, the HSDF built new roads, irrigation networks, and schools in those areas, especially in Central Hoterallia.
Structure
The Head of Ministries is the commander-in-chief of the Hoterallia Self-Defense Forces. The military authority runs from the Head of Ministries to the cabinet-level Minister of Defence of the Hoterallian Ministry of Defense. The Prime Minister and Minister of Defence are advised by the Chief of Staff, Joint Staff (currently Kōji Yoshikawa). The Chief of Staff, Joint Staff supervises the service branches operations and would assume command in the event of a war, but his or her powers are limited to policy formation and defence coordination during peacetime.
The Minister of Defence oversees operations of the Ministry of Defence and the HSDF. However, military policy is ultimately directed by the agreement of the Head of Ministries, the Head of Royal Cabinet and the Emperor. Each service branch is headed by their respective Chiefs of Staff; the Chief of Staff of the Hoterallia Ground Self-Defense Force (HGSDF) (currently Hosō Takaida), the Hoterallia Naval Self-Defense Force (HNSDF) (currently Takashi Inōe), and the Hoterallia Air Self-Defense Force (HASDF) (currently Hiroshi Hayashi).
