The Monarchy of Granica is a an absolute monarchy in which the reigning monarch acts as the head of state and government. While the monarch is the supreme executive and legislative authority, his power is partially balanced by the presence of the Vidame, the highest ranking church official in Granica.
History
Granica has been an absolute monarchy from 766-1658 and again from 1712 to present, with a brief interim as a satellite state of the Miersan Republic. The current form of the monarchy was created under Elena I of Aleia when she occupied Granica's feudal overlord, the petty kingdom of Borania. Although there have been reforms, regime changes, and occupations since then, the margraviate has had a continuous line of succession since 1615.
In 1725, the Margrave was freed from his feudal obligations to the Second Inotransic Dynasty when the Pontiff of Laterna recognized Granica as an independent state in exchange for the Margrave's support of Alydian holy orders in Asura. The Arcymistrz and Vidame are therefore important parts of the legitimacy of the margraviate and are sometimes considered constitutional checks on the Margrave.
During the aftermath of the Great War , the Margrave gave up some of his powers as a concession to the Grand Alliance. The judiciary was formally separated from the office of the Margrave and he was no longer allowed to personally adjudicate disputes. A system for referenda was also created, though there have been few instances in which the Margrave has consulted the people though a direct vote.
Role
The Margrave is the absolute ruler of Granica, but his most important role tends to be the appointment and dismissal of other officers of state in a form of cabinet called "court". The Margrave's court includes all of the great officers of the realm, most of which are also nobles with estates or are granted sinecures for their service at court. The Margrave also appoints all members of the independent judiciary.
Succession
The title of Margrave passes to the eldest male descendant of the sitting Margrave, with a life appanage for the Margrave's other direct descendants. When there are Margraves without male descendants, primogeniture is suspended and the Margrave may either elect an heir of his choosing, or allow the court to elect a replacement from among his living relatives.
Style
The full title of the Margrave is By the Grace of God, His Majesty the Margrave of Granica-in-Kylia, Protector of Zaufanie, Warden of Kylia, Loyal Defender of the True Inotransic Dynasty, Servant of God, and Hospitalier-General.
Arms
Estates & Residences
The Margrave's most famous residence is the Niebieski Pałac, which is where most state functions take place, but his official residence is Ansits Castle, just outside of Zaufanie. Ansits has not been maintained since its original construction in 1308 and is not actively lived in except for symbolic "visits" to the castle during which the Margrave and his entourage typically sleep in tents on the castle grounds, not inside. The Margrave maintains several rural lodges for his personal as well as many houses which are assigned to his subordinates, often with parcels of land. The most important of these locations are:
