The president of Greece, officially the President of the Hellenic Republic, is the constitutional head of state and head of government of the Hellenic Republic. The office was established following the abolition of the Greek monarchy during the crisis of the 1960s, which led to the enactment of a new constitution and political system based on republican principles. Uniquely among European Union member countries, Greece has a full presidential system of government, where leadership of the executive branch is vested in a single directly-elected person, the President. Currently, Michaelis Aristides of the Democratic Rally serves as the President, having been elected to his first four-year term in 2018.
