Hartly Central Station (formally known as Gare Centrale in French) is Hartly's largest rail station and the busiest rail station in Ainin, with over 90 million annual passengers, and a major terminus for Hartly Rail and Proficere. Commissioned in 1914 by Aininian National Railways to replace the antiquated Hartly Union Station, it was opened to the public in 1920. The building, notable for its art deco architectural style, is listed in the Aininian National Historic Register and currently is undergoing a major renovation to accommodate larger commuter rail rolling stock.

Origins

As Aininian National Railways underwent a major modernisation effort in the 1890s that saw the introduction of significantly larger and taller rolling stock, Hartly Union Station (built in 1833), then the city's central rail terminus, was found to be too small to properly accommodate the vehicles, causing many passenger train routes to end on the outskirts of the city, in rural and less developed areas, leading to a sharp decline in ridership. ANR CEO Matthew Bayard soon ordered the construction of a large, modern station to replace Union, and construction soon began on the site of the derelict Hamilton Theatre in 1914. Construction on the station was completed on January 8, 1917, the connection of the station to the rail network was finished by December 17, 1919, and the building was opened to the public on May 2, 1920 (Independence Day).
