The Great Betrayal (French: Grande trahison) occurred during the Aininian Revolution on 1 April 1798 when monarchist armies chased the newly-established Provisional Republican Authority of Ainin out of Hartly. In December 1797, rebel leader Henri of Namoria called for a constitutional convention to determine the future of Ainin. Delegates from all the liberated regions of Ainin gathered in Hartly and the convention was quickly separated into two distinct factions; republicans that wished to create a new Aininian Republic and monarchists that wished to restore the Glorious Confederation. On 5 March 1798, the convention narrowly voted 173-166 to establish the Provisional Republican Authority of Ainin, enraging the monarchists.
The betrayal led to a civil war in Ainin that significantly changed the alliances in the revolution conflict, with the monarchists allying the Namorese forces against the republicans. The monarchists' betrayal also led to Nevan intervention against the republican armies. At the conclusion of the war, tens of thousands of monarchists and suspected collaborators were massacred in the Republican Terror that lasted from 1801 to 1803.
