The El Hoqm massacre occured in the village of El Hoqm, 35 km southwest of Dar Al Hamma, in the night of March 11 to March 12 1998. An orphanage was attacked by the terrorists, killing the staff and the orphans. 29 of the 55 victims were children and this provoked protests against the president Abdallah Khalifun Al Massajat the following Friday, after noon prayers. The president of Salamat announced that presidential elections would be held in November 1998.
