Leningrad, (Russian: Ленинград), previously Saint Petersburg from 1703-1914 and Petrograd from 1914-1924, is the second-largest city in the Soviet Union behind Moscow. It is situated on the Neva river at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. With a population of 6.833 million in 2022, Leningrad is one of Russia's two metropolises along with Moscow, and it is the fourth most populous city in Europe along with being the most populous city on the Baltic Sea. Formerly the capital of the Russian Empire, Leningrad serves as one of the Soviet Union's most important Baltic ports, along with Riga and Kaliningrad.
