Denis Eeris (pronounced /deniz eːɾiz/) was the Prime Minister of Vyvland from 1989 to 1993, and is currently the leader of the Capitalist-Libertarian Party. Although he started out in the Christian Democratic and Conservative Party (KDC), in 1991 Eeris switched to the Liberal Party. He then helped, along with Lilia Weljreng, to set up the Capitalist-Libertarian Party in 2005. He identifies as an economic liberal and libertarian, advocating strongly for the free market and limited government. He is currently the Wetaan for the seat of Lysedal-Hoppedal in the Parliament of Vyvland.
Biography
Eeris was born in the city of Sdoprej in western Deg province. He came from a long line of shopkeepers in the town, and regularly helped in his father's shop from a young age. After leaving school Eeris became a trader by himself, selling used furniture from a small premises on the outskirts of the town. Within eight years, Eeris's company had expanded to nine locations across the area, with Eeris himself gaining over µ500,000 per year while still only aged 27.
However, at age 30, Eeris gave up the full-time management of his chain of businesses in order to study politics at the nearby University of Brubas. He had for a long time been interested in the subject, but following his university studies, Eeris started campaigning for the Christian Democratic and Conservative Party, who he had joined while at university. In 1974, he became a councillor on Brubas City Council, and then in 1976 won the previously safe People's Party-held seat of Kancaas-Jylkajwe to the city's north on a very large swing. His entrepreneurial background was highly admired by the leader at the time, Jeusev Ovdeeng, who promoted Eeris as a junior minister to the shadow National Commission in 1981.
Before the 1984 general election, Eeris decided to change his seat to Lysedal-Hoppedal, an expected safer KDC-leaning seat in Southwest province. After a third successive KDC (and earlier Christian Democrat) election defeat, Ovdeeng resigned, prompting a leadership election in which Eeris stood. Although he lost, the winning candidate, Payl Aanjressen, died just seven months after his victory, and Eeris was soon elected at a second competition in 1987. He was a vocal opponent of many of the left-wing reforms of then-Prime Minister Abram Zymeker while Leader of the Opposition.
Eeris became Prime Minister after the 1989 general election, taking over from Zymeker after a Liberal-orchestrated vote of no confidence earlier that year. He formed a coalition between his Christian Democratic and Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, and the Christian Democrats of Helland, with the Helish Union also entering his government in 1990. During Eeris's tenure as Prime Minister, Vyvland underwent a sustained rise in economic growth, especially in the former South, which received billions of mynigs worth of government funding. His government also established Vyvland's current tax and legal systems, while curtailing some of the more radical reforms enacted by the preceding government.
In 1991, Eeris left KDC for the Liberal Party, thereby giving up his party leadership (Anhelm Ferog then went on to hold the position). His motive for this was a change in political priorities and disillusionment with many high-ranking Conservatives. The effect of this was that his government increasingly became dominated by Liberal policies, ideas, and voices, to the distaste of his former party. KDC did not wish to continue the coalition beyond the 1993 general election, and thus Eeris was able to remain in a minority Liberal administration. However, he was not the party leader at the time, and thus Linda Sgartermaan instead became Prime Minister. Eeris was appointed to the position of Domestic Minister for the period, thereby holding a significant office in government, although this only lasted for one year.
During the two following Liberal spells in power - from 1996 to 1998 under Mafjas Skenterby and 2002 to 2005 under Rikard Fegaad - Eeris was appointed Minister for Transport. He was a strong advocate of the Vlud-Mafiy high-speed railway, which began construction in 2006 after years of his lobbying.
However, along with high-ranking Conservative Lilia Weljreng in 2005, Eeris formed the breakaway Capitalist-Libertarian Party from disgruntled factions in both the Liberals and Conservatives. The party has increased in size at every general election since, with Eeris remaining leader throughout its existence. After the 2013 general election, the party almost doubled its seat share and gained its first spell in government under the premiership of Kurt Blymont. Eeris was appointed Minister for Business and Trade.
Personal life
Eeris lives in Lysemaaf, in the south of his Parliament constituency, with his wife Julja. He has two children, neither of whom still live with him. He owns three dogs.
