The Boldonian-Brasilistani War, codenamed Operation Left Check, was a war that took place in mid 2022 between the newly independent Boldonia and the People's Republic of Brasilistan. It was the first official military engagement of the Independent Republic of Boldonia Military Forces, and is often used as a case study for how technological disparity effects warfare due to how behind the Brasilistani Military was technologically compared to the Boldonian force.
Background
Brasilistan was formerly a communist puppet nation of the Soviet Union, however once the Soviet Union dissolved Brasilistan started to take a more authoritarian shift. In mid April the Boldonian Intelligence Agency discovered that in desperation Brasilistan had turned to the abduction of foreign citizens for use in forced labor, which included citizens from nations such as China, Australia, and Boldonia itself. Boldonia organized whatever nations it could to launch a joint invasion with the goal of repatriation lost citizens aswell as shuting down the communist government.
Boldonian Rational For the Invasion
After the invasion the Boldonian delegate to the United Nations defended the invasion. One primary factor was the abducted citizens, which had been returned to their country even if Boldonia's relations with said country was less than ideal. Aswell it was stated that the communist regime, known for spouting revolutionary rhetoric, would eventually pose a threat to democratic governments if left unchecked.
Military Operations
Operation Falling Fire
Operation Falling Fire consisted of initial bombardment of the Brasilistani Rainforest to deny the enemy's ability to utilize the foliage in guerilla warfare and future insurgency operations. Fire bombs were utilized frequently leading to the decimation of the Rainforest and its eventual renaming to the Ash Forest.
Battle of New Stalingrad
The Battle of New Stalingrad was a naval invasion of the north half of the country. During the battle Boldonian forces supported by joint Australian-Boldonian air support were able to capture the city hall. The next few hours after consisted of door to door house clearing aswell as occasional skirmishes around landmarks.
West Peninsula Campaign
The West Peninsula Campaign was a small front opened up by Boldonian forces to draw Brasilistani forces away from the main cities and to capture, rather than bomb, the military bases on the peninsula. It was mostly a diversionary effort but Boldonian forces did achieve all of their goals and led a lot of Brasilistani forces away from the capital.
Battle of Brasilis
The Battle of Brasilis is currently the longest battle ever fought by the Independent Republic of Boldonia Military Forces. It lasted 3 days and was an intense last stand by Brasilistani forces. In the end however they were overpowered by Boldonian forces and once all major government buildings were captured Brasilistan fully surrendered.
International Reaction
Support of Boldonia
Despite Boldonia technically being the aggressor that started the war, they still received massive support from other nations. The United States sent a supercarrier group to provide naval and air support to Boldonian forces. Aswell Australia sent military units to help contain Brasilistan, which Australia saw as a potential threat. Boldonia was sent supplies and weapons from other western and western aligned nations such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and South Korea.
Cuban Response
Brasilistan was supported by one nation, Cuba, however their support was limited due to wishing to not anger the United States by engaging in combat with Boldonian forces which were allied with the US. Cuba sent some supplies to Brasilistan, including SPAA and small arms. Months after the war in September the Cuban government finally declassified their reasons for supporting Brasilistan, saying they intended to "protect the revolutionary cause in foreign nations by supporting our foreign socialist comrades in defending against western aggression."
Allegations of Warcrimes
During the war both sides were accused of committing war crimes. On the Brasilistani side they were accused of using underage soldiers as young as 15, having a strict scorched earth policy going as far as burning and massacring entire towns, and executing POWs. Boldonian forces have been accused of indiscriminately carpet bombing population centers, burning forests, and using Brasilistan to house terrorists and torture them post-war to shift blame to Brasilistan.
Aftermath
Effects on Brasilistan
Brasilistan was decimated, with the post-war capital having to be moved to New Stalingrad, renamed to New Volgagrad, due to the state that Brasilis was left in. Aswell a new authoritarian puppet governments was set up to root out revolutionaries and eliminate them. Despite this a few communists were able to hide in the Ash Forest, another notable effect of the war, and begin a guerrilla insurgency that still continues to this day.
