The 1997 Blackhelm Confederate Grand Prix was an Astyrian Formula One motor race held on April 18, 1997, at the Circus Augustus Angelbridge in Redemption, Blackhelm Confederacy.

The race drew considerable media coverage due to it being the first major international sporting  event in the newly established Blackhelm Confederacy. It would soon become infamous throughout racing circles, however, due to a fatal accident involving former AstyF1 champion Clayton Norris.

Death of Clayton Norris

During the 34th lap of the race, Clayton Norris slammed into a concrete barrier on the track, resulting in his death. The exact reason for the crash remains a mystery to this day.

Legacy

Following Norris' death the race was called off, resulting in Paavo Laakkonen being awarded the title although only half of the points.

Following the race, the Blackhelm Confederate Grand Prix would be suspended until 2005. Norris' death also ushered in a flurry of new safety regulations meant to slow drivers down, including smaller front wings, less downforce, grooved tires for less grip.
