Early parliamentary elections will be held in Portogala to elect members of the 3rd Portogalan Parliament. The snap election was called after the fall of the Salazar Government, a three-party coalition, on 24th February 2023. The collapse was caused by the split of the Liberal Party and the creation of a new party - The Centre. This is the third parliamentary election in Portogala since September 2022.
Electoral system
The Portogalan Parliament is made up of 150 seats, and all are elected through open list, proportional representation on multi-member party lists.
Of the 150 seats, 135 are elected within the 6 constituencies. The remainder are apportioned nationally as levelling seats to ensure a proportional result. Were a party to win more constituencies than it is entitled to overall, a redistribution of constituency seats may occur to reduce the number of constituency seats won by that party.
Each of the 6 constituencies has a set number of parliamentarians that is divided through constituency results to ensure regional representation. The other members of parliament (MPs) are then elected through a proportional balancing, to ensure that the numbers of elected MPs for the various parties accurately represent the votes of the electorate. A minimum of 4% of the national vote, or alternatively 12% or more within a constituency, is required for a party to enter the Parliament. Were the latter to occur, the party only gains representation within that constituency's seat share.
