The Province of Guadajara (Spanish: Provincia de Guadajara), generally known as Guadajara, is one of the 21 provinces of Guadajara.
Located in north-central Guadajara, the province is divided into ?? departments. The state capital and largest city is Huitoyuca. The province surrounds Guadajara City on three sides and borders the provinces of Espartero and Río Blanco to the north, Bacadilla to the east, and Yucumán to the south.
The area that now forms the Province of Guadajara once formed the core of the pre-Hispanic Yarí Empire. During the Spanish colonial period, the region was incorporated into the Crown of Castile. After gaining independence in the 19th century, Guadajara City was chosen as the capital of the new nation and its territory was separated from the province. Years later, parts of the province were split off to form the states of Río Blanco and Yucumán. These territorial seperations have left the province with its present size and shape, with a panhandle surrounding Guadajara City to the north and west.
