The Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (German: Sozialdemokratisches Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands, German pronunciation: [zoˈtsi̯aːldemoˌkʁaːtɪʃə aʁbaɪ̯tɐpaʁˌtaɪ̯ ˈdɔʏtʃlants]; SDAPD) is a social democratic political party in Germany. It is the successor to the historical Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria, both founded during the late 19th century.
Founded in 1978 after democratic reforms in Nazi Germany as a merger between the SPD and the SDAPÖ, the SDAPD emerged as the largest political party in the 1978 elections, surpassing the Nazi Party in a coalition with other pro-democratic parties. In 1979 with the banning of the Nazi Party, it gained a majority in the Reichstag and assumed control of Germany. Many liberal reformist Nazis, or "left-Speerites", joined the party after the Nazi Party's banning. As a result of this, the SDAPD later adopted social corporatism as a sister policy to social democracy, mainly to persuade and attract Nazis away from Neo-Nazi groups and towards the SDAPD. The left faction of the SDAPD advocates and supports democratic socialism, but the majority of the party adheres to centre-left social democracy.
