1940 - 1960 - Second Civil War and Recuperation
Danthian Civil War (1941 - 1944) This era comprised of a bloody and ferocious civil war after a succession of failed interim governments. The three year civil war was ultimately decided with the last, failed offensive by the Comistat Unity forces near the Gurri river. Within weeks, the sieged Unity forces in Marbella fell, ending the Second Danthian Civil War. A interim dictatorship was set up, harsh reprisals were implemented against the enemies of the Federation, with up to a half million lives lost during the war, the most devastating in Danthian history.
Civil Renewal (1945 - 1959) Also called ‘The Great Renewal”, this decade and a half focused on rebuilding the foundation of the Federation. Major projects included infrastructure reconstruction (e.g., roads, rail, and air facilities), re-establishment of civil society functions (e.g, hospitals, utilities, and other municipal services), and consolidation of the Federal government’s control of the Federation. One controversial action during this time was the use of the national police (Guardia Civil) to root out the remnants of Unity sympathizers. Additionally, “La Linea” (“The Line”) was also built as a “hard border” in the far reaches of the Federation, using forced labor from Unity prisoners of war.
1960 - 1980 - Isolation and Renewal
Isolationism (1960 – 1972) Considered an extension of the “Civil Renewal”, the Federation maintained limited interaction with the rest of Eurth, choosing to only engage in very limited trade with other nations. “Self-sufficiency” was the overriding goal of the Federation, with a focus on internal economic development. However, the self-imposed policy severely hampered the Federation’s efforts to modernize and continued development of the nation.
Turmoil (1973 – 1980) With a stalling economy, inconsequential international trade, and faltering of the peso, the Federation began to experience civil unrest and discontent among it citizenry. The third Caudillo was convinced change was needed to ensure the continued existence of the Federation. He mandated a transitional migration to a more sustainable form of government, even if it meant providing leftist groups recognition and participation. Thus, Danthian democratic reforms began in 1980, with a subsequent general election taking place in 1982.
1980-2000 - Development and Democracy
Federal Republic (1981 - 1982) The first official Danthian democratic elections were planned for 1982, and would be overseen by the military, representatives of the three major parties, and foreign electoral observers, to ensure transparency of the democratic process. Although there were sporadic protests during the early part of the primaries, the elections were completed successfully in September of 1982. The Constitutional Alliance Party (Partido del la Alliancia Constitutional) was declared the outright winner over the Unionist Independent Party by a 9% margin (48% to 39%), with the remaining composing of third parties. The CAP joined with the Allied Industrialist Party (PAI) to form a majority government.
Development (1983 - 2000) The first open elections led to the opening of the Danthian economy to the greater Eurth economy. Regulatory guidance for investments were relaxed and foreign companies entered the Danthian ecosphere to gain a foothold in a burgeoning new market, hungry for external interaction. Ties and trade other Eurth nations began to develop, improving the daily life of the average Danthian.
