The 1976 Abu Zeydan earthquake was the most severe aftershock of the 1976 Zalzab earthquake which occurred on September 18 1976 at 10 h 25 min 19 s local time (11 h 25 min 19 s UTC). It aggravated the damage of the preceding earthquake and killed 322 persons, some being rescuers from foreign countries. It also completely razed the village of Abu Zeydan located just above the epicenter and the fault.
