The World Cup of Hockey is the international ice hockey tournament which serves as the sport's world championship. It is regarded as the successor tournament to the Aglukark-Cherry Cup, which had lasted for 20 editions before becoming defunct.
The tournament's format and competition rules are highly variable, and depends on the host elected for each edition. The usual format is a group stage followed by knockout rounds. Some tournaments have been held only in the host country, while others have held the group stage as a round robin with participants playing home and away. Similarly, while single elimination is currently the most common knockout phase format, in some tournaments playoff series have been used and the 41st World Cup of Hockey even utilized a double-elimination format.
