Madeleine Lauretta Hayward (born February 20, 1975) is an American businesswoman, political activist and politician serving as the 42nd governor of Illinois since January 20, 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, she is Illinois's first female governor. Hayward previously served as lieutenant governor under governor Peter Florrick from 2011 until she succeeded him following his election as vice president of the United States. She was later elected in her own right in 2018. Prior to holding public office, she was a businesswoman and political activist involved in Democratic Party politics, serving as the president of EMILY's List from 2008 to 2011.

Early life and education

Madeline Lauretta Hayward was born on February 20, 1975 in Tacoma, Washington, to Suzanna (née Shapiro) and David Hayward. In grade school, her family moved to her father's native Chicago where she later attended and graduated from Jones College Prep High School in 1993. She graduated with an MBA from Kellogg School of Management in 1999.
