Národné Správy is a Sloverti daily national newspaper based in Brativas. It began in 1893. Národné Správy had an average daily circulation of 398,700 in January 2019. It is Slovertia's longest running newspaper. Národné Správy originally began as a publication in the Sloverti language only. This was until 1912 when the paper began publishing an edition in the Mazurian language. In South Mazuria the paper is called Wiadomości Krajowe). In 1992 Národné Správy published its first English edition. Národné Správy has branched into other forms of media such as the Národné Správy website Narodnespravy.com launched in 1999 and Narodné Správy Radio first aired in 2001. Since 1989 Národné Správy has been owned by United Sloverti Media.
History
Národné Správy was founded by Miroslav Veselý and Dmitri Novák on the 12th of April 1893. Both Veselý and Novák were critical of the Sloverti Monarchy and resented the state controlled press which often sucked up to the monarchy. Novák was born in Ziprata and had moved to Brativas in 1878 to persue a business venture which quickly failed and Novák began working for the monarchist newspaper Denne kráľovský which Novák was said to have hated working for but had little choice due to scarce work and a dire financial situation. Novák met Veselý during a performance in the Sloverti National Theatre, the two are said to have gone to a bar after the performance where they talked endlessly about their opposition to the monarchy and its grip on the press. The two are said to have met in the Centrálne coffee house where they debated about current events. On one of those days in theCentrálne Novák proposed forming a new newspaper that would not conform with the status quo of newspapers of that time. Veselý said he was thrilled by the idea and he being quite a wealthy man bought a premises on Noví Street in the centre of Brativas and became the owner of the new paper while Novák became the editor.
Národné Správy quickly became very popular with the working class and the growing Sloverti Middle class due to its views on the monarchy and its use of contributions from significant figures in the fields of politics, science, literature, and the arts to build its reputation. Novák tragically passed away in 1903 and a month later Veselý appointed Aleksander Tirien as the new editor of the paper. Veselý commisioned a statue of Novák to whoch still stands in the building to this day across from a statue of Miroslav Veselý which was erected upon his death in 1914.
The paper came close to being shut down on several occasions due to its anti-monarchy views and satirical takes on the exploits of thd Sloverti Royal Family. During the Republican Revolution in 1938 Národné Správy was the leading voice in the Republican cause.
The paper was bought by United Sloverti Media in 1999 ending 106 years of the Veselý family's ownership of the paper. The editor at the time Walter Dune resigned as soon as the takeover was completed.
In 2005 the paper began to print in both broadsheet and tabloid format.
Národné Správy features news for the first half of the paper; the Opinion/Comment section begins after the first news section with world news normally following this. The business pages begin on the centre spread, and are followed by The Register, containing obituaries, a Court & Social section, and related material. The sport section is at the end of the main paper.
The Saturday edition of Národné Správy contains a variety of supplements. Such as: Sport, The Review (arts, books, TV listings and ideas), Weekend (including travel and lifestyle features), Playlist (an entertainment listings guide) and The Magazine (columns on various topics).
Radio
The launch of Národné Správy Rádio was first announced on 27 January 2001. The focus of the station was outlined in a tekevision interview with one of thd new presenters on the station Marcus Dubec, where the tone was described as "measured, well-informed and non-adversarial".
Podcast and Online
Národné Správy has had an online presence since the United Sloverti Media takeover in 1999, originally at narodnespravy.com which is aimed at daily readers. Since 2001 the website has required readers not subscribed to thr pring edition to pay 5 korunas to read full articles.
