The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, shortened to EPCOT or E.P.C.O.T., is the capital city of Reedy Creek. The city is approximately 16 miles (25.7495 kilometers) southwest of Orlando. The city is often considered to be part of Greater Orlando. The initial idea for the city dates back to the 1960s, when Walt Disney planned on creating such a city, before the idea was shelved upon his death. The idea evolved into a proposed park, to be part of Walt Disney World. Construction for the park was planned for late 1979, however the Three Mile Island disaster halted those plans. Eventually, in the summer of 1981, the original plans were put back on the table for the newly-independent Reedy Creek. The city itself houses the Magic Kingdom, and holds commercial, residential, industrial, and recreational centers, connected by a mass multimodal transportation system, most notably the monorail system, which also connects outside the city to Orlando and New Hollywood.
