The 2024 Elmonton massacre started in the city of Elmonton on the night of 13 April, 2024. Hundreds of thousands of Saroqi demonstrators were fired upon by Saterocian soldiers, tanks, aircraft, and other armed equipment and vehicles throughout the night, before the massacre finally concluded the following morning when Saterocian soldiers were ordered by their higher-ups to immediately stop firing upon the crowds. The incident has become one of the deadliest in Sateroc's modern history, also becoming the deadliest massacre ever in Saroq's recent history. The massacre took place amidst the 2024 Saroq and Cascutia protests due to government restrictions within both autonomous regions, as well as immediately after the 2024 Kolkesburg bombings, which was perpetrated by Saroqi militants.
After Saterocian President Oljon Slach announced an expanded intervention into Saroq following the attacks, protests in Elmonton grew worse, with demonstrations becoming increasingly violent. Adding onto this, Naum Pavlavain, chief commander of the Brotherhood of Kolkesburg and a widely unpopular figure across Saroq and Cascutia due to his record of human rights violations, was chosen to lead the greater intervention into Saroq. He specifically stated that, in response to the bombings, his crackdown would be on an "unimaginable" scale.
At around 10:00 p.m. local time, soldiers in Elmonton who had arrived as a part of the Brotherhood of Kolkesburg reportedly received orders to fire upon the protestors, as Saroqi protestors were beginning to overpower the soldiers. As a result, live ammunition was used, with Pavlavain urging his soldiers to use "all means necessary" in order to keep the protestors down. Throughout the night, means of cracking down grew worse, as at first, tactics such as firing upon protestors were used, however then soldiers turned to using armored vehicles, aircraft, and, according to some reports, even used concealed chemical weapons against large crowds, resulting in mass injuries and deaths. In some cases, Saterocian forces even fired upon and damaged infrastructure, such as hospitals and airports.
As crowds were completely driven out of the streets by early in the morning of 14 April, the higher-ups in the Saterocian military ordered an immediate stop to the firing. As investigations soon began into the massacre, local emergency services were permitted to assist after Saterocian authorities prevented this from happening. As of 15 April, over 650 fatalities have been recorded so far, with injuries exceeding 5,000.
